Timeless
KASEY CURTIS
reviewed by
spongeballcornerpocket
What
a talent. Kasey Curtis is a young singer/songwriter with a ton
of potential. She sounds like the kind of gal you just want to
whip out your guitar a jam with for a couple of hours. Her
voice is similar to Rachel Lampa‘s, sultry and soaring. Kasey
and her band have put together some head-bobbing jams on this
6 song EP. In an age of synthesizers and drum machines,
Kasey’s country/pop/contemporary style relies on live
instruments. Lilith Fair fans will dig this album. Lyrics are
Christian, but don’t let that keep you from checking this out.
You’ll be glad you did.
To The Artist: Great songwriting talent. Wonderful lyrics -
you’re obviously very passionate about your subject matter.
Don’t ever let anyone steer you from that path. I’m sure
you’ve heard plenty of folks urging you to “branch out.” Don’t
listen. Christian Music is a wonderful genre where you can be
a very successful artist. Do you think Steven Curtis Chatman
could make it in secular music? No doubt about it, but ask him
if he would trade what he has for the greater fame and riches
that a mainstream career would surely bring. Not a chance.
Stay true to yourself, Kasey. Also, don’t be afraid to get
more “dirty” with your music. Distortion can be loads of fun.
Best of luck!

KASEY CURTIS
TIMELESS
This sweet and charming voice paints with many vivid word
pictures, but really excells when she sets out to tell a story
(like "Twenty-Seven," with its dreamy guitars and sultry vocal
phrasing). With one foot planted in the blues, Kasey lets her
voice take center stage, but she never oversteps the structure
of these 6 songs. As a huge fan of artists like Trish Murphy,
I can't help but make mental notes to continue following the
career of a new artist named Kasey.

Timeless
focuses on different aspects of God His ability to do the
impossible (“Out Loud”), His dwelling place (“Eden”),
His relentless love (“Timeless”), and His help in
overcoming sin (“Rescue Me”).
Curtis’ voice
falls somewhere between Paula Cole and Sara Groves, veering
occasionally into the country domain (“Joy”). The
standout here is the title track, noting the love from Christ
that pursues us, no matter how hard we try to elude it:
I’m
undeserving and you are unswerving…
From
orphan to daughter
Healing
traded for pain, my pain.
....Fans of Lilith Fair
artists should appreciate this one.

Kasey
Curtis:
“Way down yonder in the “big D” (that’s Dallas,
Texas y’all), Crucible Records (www.crucibleartists.com) is
a community of artists heeding the call to creativity. And
it’s breathing new life into indieland with artists like Kasey
Curtis.
Curtis grew up writing songs and listening to Margaret Becker
and Keith Green. After leaving her native California for Texas
to attend college, she rekindled her musical roots. With the
release of 1999’s The
Deep End, Cutis’ dynamic persona bursts forth in an edgy
folk-rock fury. Her spirit is infectious, rebuffing the
darkness in the world with songs of hope and light.”

Kasey Curtis: An excellent project! Crucible Records continues to
churn out one great album after another. Joe Hargrave proves he is a world class producer,
and Kasey's songs are mature, deep, and thought provoking. Kasey's vocals are front and
center the entire album. They capture the innermost soul of a writer who is gifted with
communicationg the heart of God. A Broken Records Top 20 right here!

Kasey Curtis: I first knew Kasey Curtis from when we were schoolmates in Bible College. A
couple years later I saw her perform at one of the Songwriters in the Round nights at The
Door and remember being surprised at her powerful voice and well written songs, as she was
not a performer when we were at school.
I honestly did not expect much when I heard this CD was coming out. But now that I'm
listening to the album I understand why it warrants release. This is really nice! And not
what you'd expect from a Christian female artist. Kasey writes poetic and convincing
serenades to God that seem to have a firm foothold in reality instead of the naïve
"Jesus-as-bandaid" mentality I hear a lot in modern CCM.
The production and arrangement bring out a lot in these songs, keeping the music in tune
with the CCM sound but adding a depth and credibility that shares more in common with k.d.
lang or Joni Mitchell than with Rebecca St. James or Susan Ashton. Some of these songs
even sport some edge courtesy of fuzz guitar that's actually placed in the foreground of
the mix! That's a big step for a genre notorious for its pillow-fluff niceness.
Is the Christian music world ready for a real Christian female singer? Kasey Curtis is
here, ready or not. While we wait for CCM to catch up, buy this CD and give it a spin--it
may give you a little hope for the genre. I'll be returning to this one frequently.
