Far Star is the newest rock band to come out of the rising Deep Ellum music scene. From the ashes of 'dim reflection', lead vocalist/songwriter Shannon Barrett describes Far Star as "a search for truth", much like that of the fictional ship it was named after from Isaac Asimov's classic Foundation series. The band's mix of thoughtful and challenging lyrics and across-the-board music is something that promises to take the "heavy rock” influenced Dallas area music scene by surprise. Barrett's honest, yet surprisingly open words have hit close to home for the many that have heard the band's recently recorded album, Broken Down and Wandering.
Produced by Dallas Observer Producer of the Year and
CentroMatic drummer Matt Pence, the highly respected local indie hero focused the band's strengths and tightened up their already solid set of songs brought to the sessions. With help from Daniel Hopkins (Radiant) on drums and Philadelphia resident Tommy Ciccone (The Jealous Type) on bass and keyboards, the band finally had a chance to start with the proper musicians on board.
While Barrett and guitarist Zech Lumpkin have been playing together for several years in many different incarnations of 'dim reflection', it wasn't until Barrett reunited with guitarist Paul Salfen, a long lost childhood friend, that the band started in a new direction and kicked into high gear. The addition of drummer Lance Lindsey completed the lineup.
Released in mid-February 2003, the band's debut album is something that they're really proud of. Barrett concludes, "We really got to make the album that we wanted to make with the producer we wanted to work with. Most independent bands don't get that luxury".
